Direct messages and the 24-hour window

Messages shows direct messages as one conversation per person, including story replies and button taps. You can send text, images and PDFs (up to 25 MB).

The 24-hour window

Instagram and Facebook only let businesses reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that the reply box closes until they write again. Automation follows the same rule.

A DM to someone who commented is different: you can send one per comment, within 7 days of the comment.
